Chennai: On the second day of his Tamilnadu visit, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi held discussions with top bureaucrats and police officials to seek their views on Assembly elections.
On Wednesday, he and other Election Commissioners interacted with representatives of recognised political parties in the State. "During today's discussions, officials presented some crucial inputs and the Election Commission took note of them. Based on the feedback received from parties and officials, the polling date will be fixed. Other things such as security and exams will also be taken into consideration," officials said.
During the Wednesday's meeting, DMK, Congress and BJP representatives demanded removal of bogus voters from electoral roll and insisted on a single phase polls for Tamilnadu and Puducherry.
Earlier in the day, Zaidi, who reviewed the poll arrangements in Puducherry, told reporters that voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT), a system for voting machines which allows voters to ensure that their votes are cast without error will be introduced in three Assembly constituencies in Puducherry- Oulgaret, Orleanpet and Karaikal.
VVPAT will also help to detect election fraud or possible malpractice and the machines will arrive shortly. For the first time, the State elections will also have exclusive polling booths reserved for physically disabled, visually impaired and leprosy afflicted persons in Puducherry.
To ensure inclusive participation of pubic in the election process awareness programmes will be conducted. Election Commissioners A K Joti, O P Rawat and former Tamilnadu Chief Electoral Officer Sandeep Saxena, who is now with the ECI, also accompanied the Chief Election Commissioner.
